I'm not afraid to say that I've seen Teen Wolf Too more times than I
have seen Teen Wolf. Although, if you read my site and my reviews on a
regular basis, this will come as no surprise. In fact, apart from the
blatantly obvious "Shy guy becomes wolf and plays basketball good"
storyline, I can't remember anything else of the plot at all from that
movie. To be honest, Teen Wolf Too isn't too different. The only
difference is that instead of "shy guy becomes wolf and plays
basketball good", it's "shy guy becomes wolf and boxes good. But for
some reason, this movie is one of my favourite 90 minute switch your
brain off movies.
Todd Howard is
Scott Howard's (MJF in Teen Wolf) geeky scholastic cousin, who for some
reason has got into Hamilton University on a sports scholarship. Todd
is more interested in his science class, as he wants to be a
veterinarian. He makes it very clear early on that the family "problem"
as he calls it, has skipped his generation and he couldn't be happier.
Scott's friends Styles & Chubby help Todd settle in at Hamilton,
including changing his classes, much to Todd's annoyance. After a
heated run in with a less than pleasant administration lady, he
unfortunately begins to exhibit wolf-like symptoms. Styles of course,
couldn't be happier. Todd goes to see his biology professor, Professor
Brooks to make sure he can get back into her class, where he meets
Nicki, a pretty girl in his class. But upon hearing that he is at
Hamilton on a sports scholarship, she dismisses him as nothing more
than a jock.
Todd soon discovers
that the boxing coach at Hamilton University was Scott's basketball
coach a few years earlier, and believes that Todd has the same sporting
prowess. He tries to convince Coach Finstock that he is mistaken, but
coach doesn't seem too bothered and just tells him to get in the ring
and go a few rounds. He tells Todd that once everyone knows he isn't
any good, they'll leave him alone. Dean Dunn however, has huge
expectations of Todd, and will not go easy at him at any cost.
Things start to get
a little, well, hairy if you'll excuse the pun when Todd has to attend
a school function. Nicki is there as well - and he has just about
convinced her that his sports scholarship is a mistake, when Dean Dunn
makes him dance with scantily clad jock accessory Lisa Goldfluss. Todd
finds himself getting a bit excited, and not only does this upset his
fragile friendship with Nicki, it allows the wolf in Todd to appear for
the first time.
Here's where the plot just about falls into parallel with Teen Wolf. At
first, everyone is repulsed by the wolf. But once the wolf starts
winning boxing matches, Todd Howard is everyone's favourite Lycan. The
popularity and fame goes straight to Todd's head. Dean Dunn begins
rewarding Todd with automatic A's, cars and the undivided attention of
Lisa and her friend Emily. Todd turns into a real jerk, forgetting
about the things that are really important to him, like his friends,
his dream of becoming a vet, and Nicki whom he blows off in a
spectacular fashion. Professor Brooks refuses to pass Todd like all of
his other professors, but Todd isn't all that interested in biology
anymore anyway.
Todd takes Lisa and
Emily out for a game of mini-golf, and even they are beginning to tire
of his self centred behaviour. After a run in with the number one boxer
from Hamilton's rival, a military academy, the girls leave with him and
leave Todd by himself. Not content for the party to end, he heads back
to the dorm to try and coerce Styles and Chubby into a little fun.
Unlike Todd though, they have to earn their grades and are studying for
finals. Styles makes it clear that he wishes the wolf never came out in
Todd and he feels partially responsible for turning him into a jerk
before leaving with Chubby to study in the library. Todd begins to see
some truth in what Styles had to say and starts making changes to undo
all the wrong he has done, first thing being - retiring the wolf for
good.
It doesn't take long for his friends, and Nicki to see that he really
is sorry, and Todd manages to convince Professor Brooks to give him one
more chance at taking his final. Nicki helps Todd to prepare for his
exam, but he also has one last boxing match, that he plans to win
without the help of the wolf.
Yep. we all know
where it's headed, but not every movie needs to have a twist, a turn or
a shock ending. Happy endings rule, and I hate it when things don't go
according to plan. Like "My Best Friends Wedding". Holy shit did I hate
that movie. And not just because it's a gay chick flick, and not even
because of Julia Roberts. But the fact that she goes through the whole
movie and then doesn't even get the guy anyway? What a waste of time.
If you haven't seen it, you can thank me for the spoiler because now
you don't have to watch that frustrating piece of garbage. But I
digress. I like happy, albeit predictable, fluffy endings, and I like
Teen Wolf Too. But then again, I really don't have very good taste in
movies do I?
